Tigers hold off Missouri Southern for key conference win

Craig Nicholson scored 21 points and dished out seven assists to lead the Fort Hays State Tigers to an 80-70 win over Missouri Southern in front of 2,508 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum. Royce Williams added a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds and Dom Samac scored 12 as the Tigers improve to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern has their three-game win streak snapped and drops to 8-5 on the year and 2-2 in the conference.

FHSU took advantage of cold shooting by the Lions in building a 14-point first half lead and were up 38-26 at the half. After building the lead back to 14 early in the second half, they watched Southern use a 15-4 run to pull within two with 6:46 to play. The Tigers would answer with a 9-4 run and never led by less than seven the rest of the way

FHSU shot just 45-percent for the game and 5-of-20 from beyond the arc. MSSU hit just 32-percent from the floor and were 5-of-24 from  3-point range. The Lions hit 29-of-33 freee throws and were led by Taevaunn Prince who scored a game-high 38 points.

The Tigers are back at home Monday night against Southwest Baptist.
