The Jan. 27  noon deadline to file for open school board seats is just weeks away, but Ellis County Clerk and Election Officer Donna Maskus said she has yet to receive official filings for school board positions in Hays, Ellis and Victoria.

Maskus admitted this year does seem more “slow-going” compared to years past.

The election is set for April 7 and will include city commission races, as well. In Hays, voters will decide who sits in three of the five Hays City Commission five seats, while the Hays USD 489 school board has four of seven seats on the ballot.

“We have not seen the traffic flow or the questions asked” Maskus said. “As we get if closer to the deadline, we usually get more interest.”

She said the deadline is “fast approaching” and encouraged anyone interested in running to learn more about the duties of the position and  ask questions.

“We like to see names on the ballots and interest,” Maskus said. “If you have interest at all, please come by and pick up (an application) packet, ask any questions you need and move forward if you are ready.”

Applications can be picked up at Ellis County Clerk’s office located inside the new county building at 718 Main Street in Hays.

For more information, contact the Ellis County clerk’s office at (785) 628-9410.
