Governor proposes steady aid for Kansas public schools

School fundingTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback’s budget proposals would keep overall state aid to public schools near current levels through June 2017.

The Republican governor released his detailed recommendations Friday. He’s proposed changes in the current budget and outlined spending plans for state government for the next two fiscal years.

His proposals would keep the state’s aid for public schools at nearly $4.1 billion in the current budget and for each of the next two fiscal years.

But many educators consider current funding levels inadequate. Also, the totals for state aid include major increases in spending on teachers’ pensions during the next two fiscal years.

Brownback’s recommendations come with the state facing projected shortfalls totaling more than $710 million for the current and next fiscal year’s budget.
