Hays 77 – Fountain-Fort Carson 65
Hays trailed just once in their 77-65 win over Fountain-Fort Carson on Thursday night in Colby. The Indians trailed 5-4, then used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Fountain Fort Carson trimmed the lead to one, but a Drew Young three pointer to beat the first quarter clock put Hays back up by four.
The Trojans once again cut the lead to two with a dunk to open the second quarter, but Hays went on a 8-0 run to build their first double digit lead at 26-16. Hays had the lead cut down to four, then went on a 14-4 run to close the first half leading by 16 at 40-24.
Highlights
Hays would increase the lead to 20 during the third quarter and cruise to their eighth win of the year.
It is the 12 consecutive opening round win for Hays at the 30th Annual Paul Wintz/Tom Bowen Orange and Black Classic. Hays is now 8-2 on the year. Fountain Fort Carson drops to 7-6.

The Indians had four players score in double figures, led by the 22 points and 14 rebounds of Brady Werth. Isaiah Nunnery and Keith Dryden each scored 16. Nunnery was 9-9 from the free throw line. Shane Berens scored in double figures for the first time in his career, adding ten points. Werth moved into second all-time in scoring at Hays High passing 1977 grad Bill Giles who had 952 points. Werth now has 974 points. He also moved into fifth all-time in rebounds, passing Justin Johnson who graduated in 1990 with 510 rebounds. Werth currently has 513 boards.
Hays will be in action on Friday night against Palmer Ridge, Colorado. Their Bears beat Colby 61-24 in the final game on Thursday. Tip off will be around 8:15 at the Colby Community Building.
