Hays, Kansas – Melvin J. “Mel” Schreiber, age 83, died Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Hays Medical Center Hays, KS.
He was born December 19, 1931, in Great Bend, KS, to Fred and Margaret (Mauler) Schreiber. He married Frances L. “Frankie” (Musick) on September 27, 1952 in Hutchinson, KS. She died April 3, 2012.
He was director of fleet maintenance for Becker Corporation in El Dorado, KS, for 21 years. He also worked 11 years at Thompson Transport in McPherson, KS. He was a US Navy veteran, served on the USS Hancock. He moved to Hays in 2008 from Andover, KS. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include one son, Dale Schreiber and wife, Beth, Gray, TN; two daughters, Pam Joy and husband, Fred, Hays, KS; Terrie Vandine, Wichita, KS; one brother, Kenneth Schreiber and wife, Joan, Olmitz, KS; one sister, Betty Pancost and husband, Allen, Sterling, CO; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Schreiber, Denver, CO; eight grandchildren, Michelle (Josh) Callahan, Jeff Schreiber, Chrisy (Tony) Crough, Scott (Briar) Schreiber, Jessica Vandine, Brett Schreiber, Katie Joy, and Courtney Vandine; and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Father Paul Schreiber J.C.B. and Eugene Schreiber.
Services are at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 31, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, KS. Inurnment will be at the Burrton Cemetery, Burton, KS, at 4:00 PM, Saturday.
A vigil service is at 6:30 PM, Friday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 PM, Friday, both at Clines Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, KS 67601.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays and 9:00 to 10:00 AM, Saturday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
