Independence Day is nearly here, and with it fireworks. Fireworks are meant to be fun, but when used incorrectly they can lead to serious injuries as well as become a nuisance to others. The Hays Fire Department reminds everyone to be safe this holiday and has released a list of tips to keep fireworks fun for everyone.
1. In Hays, consumer fireworks are only allowed to be sold on July 2, 3 and 4. Fireworks can only be used between the hours of 10am and 11pm.
2. State law prohibits fireworks from being ignited or discharged from a moving vehicle, within 100 feet of a hospital, nursing home, or fireworks sales location, or within 50 feet of a fuel pump.
3. Use fireworks as intended. Do not try to alter or combine fireworks.
4. Keep a hose, water bucket, or fire extinguisher handy when using fireworks.
5. Call 911 promptly if a person is injured or a fire starts while using fireworks.
6. Practice courtesy & respect. Clean up your fireworks debris and avoid disturbing your neighbors when using fireworks.
