Abandoned animals found in Kansas motel room

SALINA -An odor complaint at a west Salina motel on Thursday afternoon led authorities to the discovery of several animals that were abandoned more than two weeks ago.

Vanessa Cowie, animal services supervisor at the Salina Animal Shelter said three cats, several small mammals, and reptiles native to the area were found in the room.

There was excessive fecal matter in the room, and some of the animals survived by eating those that did not.

Cowie believes most of the animals rescued will recover. “Once the reptiles are considered okay, they will be released back into the wild,” she said.

Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said they are looking for a known suspect who had rented the room at the Travelers Lodge at 245 S. Broadway, who was last seen about two weeks ago.

Animal Cruelty is among the possible charges the suspect could face.

Cowie added that programs are available, where in the case of an emergency which will provide care for animals so they are not abandoned.
