COLBY – Hays’ Ricky Hockett delivered on a two-run double in the fourth inning as the Monarchs picked up a 3-2 win over Doniphan County in the second round of the AA State American Legion tournament Thursday in Colby.

The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Justin Pfeifer RBI single scoring Jordan Gottschalk who led off the inning with a single.

Doniphan County answered with two in the top of the third to go up 2-1. They threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases on three straight singles. But Monarchs starter Ryan Ruder got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to work out of the jam.

Then in the Monarchs half of the fourth Chase Romme reached on a dropped strike three and Kameron Schmidt reached an error for Hockett who delivered the two-run double giving Hays the 3-2 lead.

Ryan Ruder allowed two runs and struckout five in a complete game victory.

Hays improved to 24-7 with the win and will play Beloit, who defeated Colby 11-3, at 5 p.m. Friday. You can hear the game on 96.9 KFIX.

In an elimination game Thursday Larned defeated Marysville 5-2 and will play Colby.

In the other elimination game Iola beat Wellington 11-5 and will take on Doniphan County.
