A Manhattan woman who claimed her ex-boyfriend had threatened her had a protection order against him dropped just eight days before he killed her and himself.
The Manhattan Mercury reported that the deaths have led to complaints that not enough was done to protect 23-year-old Amanda Victoria Bonner. Police say 26-year-old Kawon Darmet Higgins shot her Dec. 30 before committing suicide. Bonner and Higgins had two children together.
In filing for a protection order in June, Bonner wrote that Higgins had threatened to kill her more than once, and that he had keyed her car. Before dropping the order, police records show that officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to Bonner’s home 13 times because of issues with Higgins. Reports were not filed for every response.
