With Fort Hays State University students beginning classes this week, the Hays Police Department is urging students to use caution during their off-hour activities.

Some safety tips from the department are below, the slideshow above also highlights some ways to remain safe in Hays.

o   Be aware of your surroundings

o   Don’t allow technology to make you unaware of your surroundings

o   Never walk alone at night

o   Avoid becoming inebriated and losing control

o   Binge drinking is dangerous

o   Never stay at a party when your friend leaves

o   Utilize locks

o   Know your way around campus & town

o   Always have emergency contacts with you or in your device, such as Safe Ride, the police and the Kelly Center
