A 20-year-old international student has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault that occurred earlier this month on the Fort Hays State University campus.

Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said in a news release Wednesday that Fernando Insaurralde Cantero, 20, Paraguay, was arrested Tuesday by the FHSU Police Department on suspicion of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated burglary.

Cantero made his first appearance in Ellis County Court on Wednesday morning and bond was set at $250,000. He remains in the Ellis County jail in lieu of bond.

According to Drees, the incident, which occurred Sept. 20 on the FHSU campus, remains under investigation by law enforcement. FHSU Police, the Hays Police Department, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are all assisting with the investigation.

All criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
