The Emporia State Lady Hornets use a 24-7 run spanning the first and second halves to go from eight down to up nine and defeat the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers 81-70 Wednesday night at White Auditorium in Emporia.
The Lady Tigers led by as many as nine in the first half, but a late 15-2 Hornet run put ESU up five before Traci Keyser hit a 3-pointer off an in-bound pass to pull the Tigers within 34-32 at the half.
The Hornets outscored FHSU 9-2 to open the second half to go up 43-34. The Lady Tigers never got any closer than three the rest of the way.
Fort Hays shot 37-percent from the floor but just 4-for-14 from 3-point range (1-5 in the second half). The Hornets shot 44-percent and hit 7-of-13 from 3-point range after missing their first four.
Traci Keyser was 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 8-for-8 from the free throw line and led the Tigers with a season-high 21 points. Kate Lehman added 16 points, 11 rebounds and had seven blocks.
The Hornets were led by freshman center Merissa Quick who scored 20 before fouling out. Quick had 17 in the first half.
The Lady Tigers are now 0-27 all-time on the road against ranked Division II teams and have lost 13 straight to the Hornets and 10 straight in Emporia. They fall to 14-4 and 6-4 in the MIAA.
