No Action to Address Gas Station Antics

There are no federal, state or local regulations requiring gas stations to post prices anywhere other than on the pump. However, most stations do post their prices so that motorists driving by will know what gas costs.

One station in Hays that charges higher prices does not post them on a sign, and the city commission Thursday night discussed if they should find a way to either warn motorists or require the prices to be easily visible. Commissioner Ron Mellick says it’s not the city’s responsibility to make sure buyers look for the best price.

City Attorney John Bird told the commission they could pass an ordinance requiring gas stations to post prices on a sign, but there could be unintended consequences. The commission decided not to take any action.
