The Science and Mathematics Education Institute at Fort Hays State University invites the Hays community to step back in time by attending the Plymouth Schoolhouse Open House from 3:30 to 5 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 30.

Ann Noble, Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science program specialist, said most people don’t know what or where the schoolhouse is.

“It’s exciting to have it on campus,” Noble said. “It was moved from Russell County to Hays.”

The schoolhouse is located on Lyman Drive, south of Sheridan Hall. Decorations will be mostly from that time period. Hot chocolate, cider and cookies will be provided.

“It’s fascinating to walk inside and see what that time was like. They had the big wooden stove and a water bucket that everyone would drink out of. First through eighth grades would all be taught in the same room by one teacher,” said Noble.

Community members are invited to come and go as they like, regardless of whether they stay for five minutes or an hour, she said.
