Water will be in limited supply overnight Wednesday, Dec. 2, for city of Hays water customers north of Interstate 70.

Water Utilities Department workers will shut down the 41st Street pump vault at 11 p.m. to repair a nearby water leak.

“We hope it takes less than eight hours,” said Tim Huck, Water Utilities superintendent. “We’re doing the work at night when water usage is the lowest.”

The northernmost area will have a limited water supply from the 55th Street water tower until city crews complete the installation of a valve.

Before the work starts, the water tower will be completely filled. According to Huck, it takes about 26 hours before the water level “runs way down,” leaving an 18-hour window for the project.

It’s going to be cold at the job site. The weather forecast is calling for an overnight low Wednesday of 21 degrees.

“The warmest guy will be the one in the ground working on the pipe leak,” Huck said.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on 41st Street between Country Lane and Vine while the work is underway.

Anyone with questions should call Huck at (785) 650-1787.
