Hays Sweeps Colby in Hays City Shootout openers

The Hays High Lady Indians started off the new basketball season with one of the teams they beat twice last year during a six win season. Hays hosting the 33rd Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout took on Colby to start the 2015-16 basketball season.

Colby hit three free throws in the first two minutes to take the early 3-0 lead. Hays responded with six straight points, but once again fell behind at 8-6. That was the last time Hays would trail in the first half. Talyn Kleweno scored ten consecutive points for the Lady Indians in the first quarter and Hays led 15-9 after the first.

Kleweno continued her hot shooting in the second quarter putting up 15 points to set a new career high. Hays pushed their lead as high as twelve before half time and led 30-20 at the break.

Lady Indian Highlights


Hays built their lead to 15 in the third quarter then hit an offensive stall. Colby took advantage to make the game close with a 15-5 run over the next six minutes, getting within five at 41-36. Hays finally broke out of the funk with a three from Audra Schmeidler and a jumper from Nicole Dinkel, pushing the lead back ten and providing enough cushion down the stretch in the 51-41 win.

Hays was led by the career highs of 17 from Talyn Kleweno and 12 by Haley George. Schmeidler scored in double figures for the 16th time in her career adding 11. Colby was led by 17 from Brenly Terrell and 11 by Allie Friesen.

Hays moves on the to the semi-finals to face off against WAC foe Great Bend who they beat at the end of last season. Great Bend beat Olathe North 42-36.

The Hays High Indians raced out to a 9-0 lead over Colby in the first 80 seconds of the game and then backed it up with a 16-3 run to lead 27-7 after one quarter. The Indians pushed the lead to 30 at half 50-20. Twelve different players saw time in the first half with nine scoring.

Indians Highlights


The Hays starters played roughly the first four minutes of the third quarter as the Indians pushed their lead to 39 by the end of the third leading 66-27. Both teams cleared the benches in the fourth quarter as Hays moved to 1-0 with a 77-40 victory.

Isaiah Nunnery and Keith Dryden led the team with 14. Maddux Winter scored a career high 10. In all 15 played for the Indians and 12 scored.

Hays will take on Olathe North in the semi-finals. The game is a rematch of the 2014 championship won by the North Eagles.
