Jerry Ubert has been named the most recent Covenant Builders Hometown Hero.
He will be honored at Thursday’s Fort Hays State University basketball games, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Gross Memorial Auditorium. Hamburglar and Grimace from McDonald’s also will be on hand for a halftime dunk contest for children.
From Ubert’s nomination form:
Jerry was born & raised in Hays. He was stationed in Alaska during the Vietnam War. He continues to be an active member of the American Legion.
He has also been an active member of the Hays Bowling Association over 25 years. He also serves as President of the James Motor Company Scratch Bowling League.
Jerry and Kathy Ubert were married 8/20/1976. They have two grown sons, Kevin and Keith, who are also members of the local Kiwanis Club, and a granddaughter, Kynlie.
The main reason for Jerry’s nomination is his involvement in the Kiwanis Club of Hays. He is member of the local Kiwanis Legion of Honor which recognizes those who have served 25 years or more. Jerry joined Kiwanis in September 1982.
He served as Club President from October 1988-September 1989. He served as a Kansas Lieutenant Governor from October 1989- September 1990. He served as Kansas Kiwanis Governor for October 1991-1992.
Jerry has also been honored by the State of Kiwanis and Kiwanis International with the following prestigious awards: James Putnam Award (1992); George F. Hixon Award (1995); and the Walter Zeller Award (2013)
Jerry has been active at the local level since 1982. The reason for his nomination is for the Hays Kiwanis Flag Project, which began in the year 2000 with less than 100 flags. Community members sign up to have the U.S. Flag flown at their home or business five times a year: Memorial Day; Flag Day; July 4th; Labor Day; and Veterans Day. Over 1,000 community members sign up to participate in this project for $35 a year. All proceeds stay in the community.
