The Ellis Railroaders and the Quinter Bulldogs tangled in a Tuesday night showdown at Ellis High School on the Y102 Area Game of the Week and the two teams would end up splitting the two games.
In the girls game the lady Railers jumped out early in a tight battle and led by just three after the first quarter, 10-7. Into the second quarter the tight battle continued, while neither offense was able to getting going. The two teams combined for seven points in the second quarter and Ellis led 13-11 at halftime.
The two offenses would wake up in the second half combining for 48 points. The Ellis lady Railroaders used a 7-0 run to take a 23-20 lead to end the third quarter. Ellis opened up with two straight baskets to extend their lead to seven, their largest lead of the night. Quinter answered back with an 8-0 capped by back-to-back threes, one by Kayla Zerr and the other by Brooke Flax, to take a 32-29 lead. Quinter was able to score on the final three possessions of the game to seal the 38-34 win.
Brooke Flax scored a game-high 10 for Quinter, Kayla Zerr and Kylie Werth both added 8 points. Mikayla Gottschalk led Ellis with 8 and Sara Mick, Bailey Hensley and Kaleigh Soneson each added 6 points.
The Lady Railroaders drop to 6-9 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 5-9.
Unfortunately for the Quinter Bulldogs the boy’s game wouldn’t be so close. Quinter opened the game with a 5-4 lead in the first quarter and that would be the only time they would lead in the game. Quinter closed out the first quarter leading 13-9. The second quarter would be the one that would do in the Quinter Bulldogs tonight. The Railers opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run and led 17-9, when all was said and done in the second Ellis outscored Quinter 24-7 in the second and they never looked back as they cruised to a 64-39 win.
Luke Lohrmeyer fought off early fall trouble to lead all scorers with 14. Thatcher Brown added 10 and Tyler Walters and Jared Mick both added 9 for Ellis. Brain Ochs was the only Bulldog in double figures with 1, Logan Reed added 8 and Jesse Ochs finished with 7.
Ellis surpassed their win total from last season with their 9th win this season, they are now 9-6 while the Bulldogs drop to 5-9.
Quinter will take to the road on Friday in a MCL matchup with Smith Center and Quinter returns home to take on Oberlin-Decatur Community.
