Children from across the area will get a chance to learn about life in the late 1800s and early 1900s at the 15th annual Ellis County Historical Society’s Pioneer Day.

Children from kindergarten through fifth-grade will take part in Wednesday’s event and learn about rug making and clothes washing and get to tour the Harness Shop and the Volga German Haus.

Also this year, there will be a trick roping performance by Joan Wells at 6 p.m. at the Historical Society grounds. Well’s is a Women’s World Champion trick roper and inductee into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

Her routine is choreographed to western music and her traditional style and tricks are those seen in the early years of the wild west shows and rodeos.

Well has also made appearances on national television including performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Will Rogers Follies and Pawnee Bill and Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.

The roping performance is free and open to the public.
