Royals complete final day of 2016 First-Year Player Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals completed the third and final day of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft today, selecting a total of 39 players.

The Royals selected 21-year-old A.J. Puckett, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher from Pepperdine University with their first pick, 67th overall in the second round on Thursday. He went 9-3 with a 1.27 ERA as a junior, posting the third-best ERA in West Coast Conference history. His season included a 45.2 consecutive scoreless innings streak, the third-longest streak in college baseball history.

Kansas City selected five local products: second baseman Logan Gray (Leawood, Kan.) in the 13th round out of Austin Peay University, center fielder Nick Heath (Junction City, Kan.) in the 16th round out of Northwestern State University, right-handed pitcher Grant Gavin (Parkville, Mo.) in the 29th round out of the University of Central Missouri, outfielder Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) in the 33rd round out of Poplar Bluff High School and right-handed pitcher Nathan Webb (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) in the 34th round out of Lee’s Summit North High School.

With their 38th-round pick, the Royals selected shortstop Joey Fregosi (Murrieta Valley HS, Calif.), son of Jim Fregosi, Jr., Kansas City’s Special Assistant to the General Manager, and grandson of the late Jim Fregosi, the former Major League manager.
