McCoy leads East to Shrine Bowl victory

EMPORIA – The East used high scoring first and fourth quarters to pick up its third win in the last four years, 48-22 in the 43rd annual Kansas Shrine Bowl Saturday at Welch Stadium in Emporia.

The East squad jumped out to an early first quarter lead scoring 19 straight points to start the game. Topeka graduate Mike McCoy put the East up 13-0 on a one yard touchdown run. McCoy would finish as the East team MVP with 89 yards on 13 carries and his four rushing touchdowns ties a Shrine Bowl game record. He also had 53 yards receiving.

The West team came storming back to take the lead with 20 unanswered points. Holcomb quarterback Trey Teeter connected with Ian Rudzik of Ulysses on a 23 yard touchdown pass to give the was a 20-19 lead in the second quarter. But the East added another McCoy touchdown run giving the East a 26-20 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter the East went on to outscore the West 22-7 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 48-27 win.

Rudzik was named the West MVP with four tackles and a pass breakup on defense and two rushes for 22 yards and one touchdown reception.

El Dorado will host the 2017 Shrine Bowl July 28th and 29th at BG Products Stadium, home of the Butler Grizzlies.
