The Trego Golden earned a pair of wins on Senior night to wrap up the regular season. The Quinter Bulldogs travels East on I70 to Quinter in the final Tuesday night of the regular season in high school basketball. With both teams still have a lot to play for it would take overtime for the Bulldogs and the Golden Eagles to determine a winner in the girl’s game.
Trego really had it going early in the first quarter. The Eagles made eight of 10 field goal attempts and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. Hannah Dietz spurred the first quarter run, chipping in 7 and Haley Dietz added four as the Eagles led 17-4 after one. Quinter’s Missy Reed kept to Bulldogs in the game scoring their first 10 points and then the rest of her teammates picked her up in the second quarter as they outscored Trego 15-2. Brooke Flax added six of her 17 in the second quarter as well. The two teams were tied at 19 at the half.
Coming out halftime it was much of the same for Quinter. The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run and led 30-22, eight was their largest lead of the game. Lexi Riedel helped the Eagles cut the gap to just five, 35-30 after three. Riedel added seven more in the fourth quarter helping erase a five-point deficit and tie the game at 49 at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period the Eagle went back to what had worked early on, going inside. Haley Dietz had 11 of her 19 points as the Eagles came away with the 65-61 win. Quinter’s Missy Reed led all scorers with 20 points and Brooke Flax added 17. Haley Dietz and Lexi Riedel both had 19 for Trego.
The Eagles improve to 13-7 with the win and Quinter dropped to 8-11.
In the boys game tonight the Trego Golden Eagles used the 3-point shot to jump out to an early lead but had to hold on and weather the storm late to earn the win.
After Trego open up a 4-0 lead the Quinter Bulldogs took and 15-11 lead behind Brian Ochs’ 8 first quarter points but Trego close to quarter on 10 nothing run to take a 21-15 lead after one. Despite giving up at least three inches, Trego Devin Ghumm went right at Ochs on the inside and scored 8 first quarter points.
After making two three pointers in the first quarter the Eagles began the second quarter with two straight from John Griffith and they made eight threes in the game, six came in the first half. Trego’s largest lead of the game was 19 at 50-31 at the half. Quinter however would not go away in the game outscoring Trego by 10 in the second half.
Quinter’s Brian Ochs scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter and Freshman Brett Christ had 14 points in the second half. But Trego’s hot start to the game was just too much as they come away with a 86-75 win. The two teams combined to shot 62 free throws, although neither team make more that half.
Ochs led all scorers with 23 and Crist added 21 and Jesse Ochs finished with 17 points. Brad Pfannenstiel was the high man for Trego with 19, John Griffith had 17 and Clayton Riedel added 16. Trego improves to 9-12 with the win and the Bulldogs drop to 7-12.
