DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Hays Monarchs American Legion baseball team took advantage of a fielding error to score the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and beat the Hays Senior Eagles 3-2 in pool play Saturday at the Dodge City Baseball Club Tournament at Cavalier Field.
The Monarchs improve to 1-1 in pool 1 play while the Eagles fall to 0-2.
Cole Zimmerman led off the seventh with a single. With one out Trent Mayo laid down a sacrifice bunt. An error by Eagles shortstop Palmer Hutchison on a ground ball off the bat of Tate Garcia allowed Zimmerman to score the winning run from second.
Zimmerman drove in a run with a single in the second then scored later in the inning on a double by Mayo.
The Eagles (13-4) scored a run on catcher’s interference in the third and on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Zimmerman allowed two unearned runs on two hits with nine strikeouts and four walks for the win.
Trey Riggs allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks and suffered the loss.
The Monarchs (7-3), who have won six of their last seven, closes out pool play later Saturday against Russell. The Eagles, who have lost two straight following an 11-game win streak, plays the Butler County Cubs.
