Hays Monarchs go 3-2 at Dodge City Tournament

The Hays Monarchs American Legion finished 2-0 on the final day of the Dodge City Tournament Sunday.

Game 1: Hays 12, Great Bend 8
In the first game the Monarchs scored seven runs in the third inning and rallied for a 12-8 win over Great Bend.

Great Bend scored five runs in the top of the first inning and jumped out to a 5-2 lead after one.

Then in the third inning with the bases loaded and no one out Luke Ruder got the inning started with an RBI single, Cole Zimmerman followed that with a two-run double tying the game at 5. Adam Gottschalk give the Monarchs the lead on a sacrifice fly.

Then two batters later Tate Garcia delivered a two-run single to put Hays up 8-5. Trent Mayo tacked on one more run with an RBI double to put the Monarchs up 9-5.

In the fifth Garcia added an RBI single and Hays took advance of a Great Bend error to go up 12-5.

Great Bend scored three in their half of the seventh before the Monarchs were able to close out the 12-8 win.

Garcia finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Chas Werth drove in three runs as well.

Mayo earned the win allowed eight runs, six earned, on nine hits over six and two-thirds innings.

Game 2: Hays 15, Beloit 4
In game two the Monarchs scored six runs in the first and scored in four of the five runs in a 15-5 win over Beloit.

The Monarchs loaded the bases, with one out, in the top of the first inning and scored the game’s first two run on a Luke Ruder single. A pair of walks with the bases loaded gave Hays a 4-0 lead and then with the bases still loaded Tate Garcia drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single.

Hays scored two runs in both the second and fourth innings and blew the game open with a five run fifth inning on their way to a 15-4 win in five innings.

Garcia drove in four runs and Luke Ruder added three more RBIs for the Monarchs.

Chase Werth earned the win allowed four runs, two earned over five innings while striking out seven.

The Monarchs are 9-4 on the season and travel to Hoisington for a doubleheader Monday.
