The Monarch baseball team continued their hot streak as they picked up a couple of wins against Garden City Thursday evening at TMP Field.
Thomas More Prep – Marian won the first game in 10 innings 2-1 and posted a strong third inning to win the second game of the doubleheader 7-2.
TMP has now won five straight games to get their record up to 5-1 while Garden City falls to 2-4.
The battle of the bison was not going well for TMP throughout the majority of game number one as the Buffaloes from Garden City led 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, senior Colby Schippers hit a triple to right field to give TMP a runner in scoring position for Dylan Schumacher. Schumacher would force a sacrifice fly deep enough to score Schippers and send the game into extra innings with a score tied up at one. Schippers led the offensive attack in game one on 2-for-4 hitting with a run scored.
Neither team was able to do anything until the bottom of the 10th when TMP loaded the bases and Dylan Gottschalk hit a ball back to pitcher who ended up making a bad throw back to home allowing Nick Hammeke to score and end the game.
TMP’s Pierce Schippers was the starting pitcher for the Monarchs but worked a no decision through seven innings pitched. Pierce (0-0) gave up one run on five hits while recording eight strikeouts and one walk. Junior Shane Zimmerman (2-1) earned the win pitching the three extra innings while only giving up two hits.
TMP took care of Garden City in the second game by scoring all seven of their runs in the third inning. Hammeke (2-0) was the winning pitcher as he picked up his second complete game of the season only giving up two runs on three hits.
TMP receives another home doubleheader next Friday (4/13) against the Hoisington Cardinals for their first conference game. First pitch for game one is set to go at 4PM.
