Kansas high school student killed in Costa Rica

MCLOUTH, Kan. (AP) – A school trip turns deadly after a teen dies in Costa Rica.

According to our news partners in Kansas City, KMBC TV, a student from McLouth High School was killed while on the trip. McLouth is northwest of Kansas City.

16-year-old Justin Johnston was shot early Thursday Morning according to a statement from McLouth School District officials.

12 students from the McLouth High Spanish Club were on the trip as well as two district sponsors. Officials say no other students were hurt, and they are trying to bring them home early.

“The district’s primary concern is for the Johnston family and also for the many students and staff members who are affected by this tragedy. The district’s crisis plan has been activated and counselors will be available on site for students and staff today and tomorrow,” according to the school district’s statement.
