Hays girls falls to Aquinas in tournament finals

St. Thomas Aquinas 63 – Hays 36

The Hays High Indians took part of their first Hays City Shootout championship game since 2006 as they played St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday night.  Hays entered the game at #9 in 4A-D1 and St. Thomas Aquinas at #1 in 5A.

Aquinas hit their first five shots of the game, three of which were three pointers, to build a 13-4 lead.  Hays cut the lead down to 15-7 on a Tasiah Nunnery three but the Saints finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run for a 22-7 lead.  Aquinas outscored Hays 15-14 in the second quarter.  At one point the Saints lead swelled to 21 until Hays scored the final five of the half to trail 37-21.

Highlights

Brooke Denning knocked in a three pointer to start the third quarter and cut the Saints lead down to 37-24.  Aquinas then went on the game clinching 18-0 run to go up 55-24.  Hays trailed 55-29 after three quarter and fell by the final score of 63-36.

Brooke Denning scored a team high 13.  Denning and Savannah Schneider were each named to the All-Tournament team.  Tara Hertel was selected to the Academic team.

Hays falls to 2-1 on the season.  St. Thomas Aquinas is 3-0.  The Indians head on the road on Tuesday to play the Pratt Greenbacks.
