A weekend fire at an apartment in Hays killed a pet, but did not spread to the adjacent apartment. No one was home when the fire started Saturday morning at 204 West 5th Street.
Captain Chris Stegman with the Hays Fire Department says a burner on the stove was left on, igniting other items in the kitchen. The fire extinguished itself before the firefighters arrived.
The kitchen sustained moderate damage, and there was smoke damage through the rest of the apartment.
