The Hays Larks take advantage of seven walks in the first four innings, then pull away in the middle innings for a 16-6 win over the Denver Cougars at Larks Park.
The Larks took a 3-1 lead in the first on Ethan Leiter’s two-RBI double. Denver would score five in the second to take the lead, but the Larks respond with four runs in both the third and fourth innings to take the lead for good. Cam Brown goes three-for-four with a double, capping off the three-game series with a 9-for-12 start to the season. Leiter was two-for-five with a double, homer and three RBIs. Jon Ryan also collects two hits and drives in three.
Matt Schmit was strong in relief for the Larks, pitching four and one-third innings of scoreless ball, giving up just two hits and walking one for his first win.
The Larks are off today before opening Jayhawk League play tomorrow night at Dodge City.
