The Ellis County Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will be shorter this year.

The new co-chairpersons, Lonny and Becky Claycamp of Hays, hope the change will draw more teams since many people can’t commit to a 12-hour event.

The Relay is June 1 at the Felten Middle School track.  The opening ceremony is at 7p.m.; the closing ceremony at 12 midnight.  That will cut the event down to 5 hours instead of 12 hours and won’t require overnight camping.

Local cancer survivors and their caregivers were recently honored with a Survivors Supper in the Victoria Grade School, where participants were served lasagna and enjoyed a chocolate fountain for dipping a selection of desserts.

American Cancer Society Community Development Director Kim Peach, LaCrosse, describes the dinner as an opportunity for people meet others who know exactly what they’re going through.  “The experience becomes a support network,” she says.

Lonny Claycamp is a bone marrow cancer survivor who’s been in remission since April 2009.
