Hays Teacher Named Finalist

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Several Kansas teachers have been named finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The teachers were announced at a ceremony Tuesday in Hutchinson at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center.

Finalists in math are Jerold Harris of Hays; Vincent LaVergne of Shawnee Mission; and Angela Miller of Manhattan-Ogden. The science finalists are Stacie Borjon of Shawnee Heights; Dennis Burkett of Olathe; and Jeanna Scheve of Garnett.

The finalists each received a $500 award and will compete at the national level. One math and one science teacher will represent Kansas at the national competition, with each receiving a $10,000 prize.

National winners will be announced in the spring of 2012.
