Javelin throwers Makayla McPhail and Holly Brown advanced to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The two are the only two Fort Hays State women’s track and field team members to make the championships, which are held in Pueblo, Colo. from May 24-26.
McPhail earned a spot in the field after achieving numerous automatic qualifying marks this season. The sophomore from Liberal, Kan., threw an automatic qualifying mark at six meets this season and has been a lock for the field since the Alex Francis Classic on March 31. McPhail broke the new model javelin school record this season with her 159-4 throw at the MIAA Championships, where she was the individual champion. She enters the championships as the No. 2 seed in the event.
Brown, a junior from Plains, Kan., earned a spot in the field as the No. 15 seed in the javelin. Her provisional mark was obtained at the Fort Hays State Open April 28, where Brown threw 140-2. She hit a provisional mark five times this season, including her season-best at the FHSU Open.
The NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships start on May 24 in Pueblo, Colo., hosted by CSU-Pueblo at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
