Charlene Friedel

Charlene Friedel, age 78, of Grainfield, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born Doris Charlene Jacob, on March 9, 1940, in Studley, Kansas to Loyal T. and Elsie S. (Cressler) Jacob.

Charlene graduate from Sheridan Community High School, Hoxie, Kansas with the class of 1958, then attended Cosmetology School in Salina, Kansas. She was a hairdresser for 35 years. She was also a dental assistant for Dr. Gordon Mahanna. Her favorite hobbies were flowers, gardens, and crafting. She loved to spend time with family and friends. Charlene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a Tri-S Club member. She was married to Jim Selbe. Three children were born to this union. She then married Richard Deges and moved to the farm near Grainfield, Kansas, where she helped with many farm jobs and mowing. During the 1980’s and 90’s, they grew their farm until Richard’s passing. Her family grew at that time. In 2007, she was united in marriage to Larry Friedel, at their home in Grianfield, and her family grew even more. Charlene will be missed by many friends and family.

She is survived by her husband; children, Terry L (Pam) Selbe of Goodland, Kansas, Randy L. (Kelly) Selbe of Goodland, and Susan Irene (Paul) Keith of Quinter; stepchildren Melanie Rhodes of Elk City, Oklahoma, Kenneth Friedel (Jodi Wright) of Beaver, Oklahoma, and Ed (Jolene) Deges of WaKeeney, Kansas; grandchildren, Traci (Kevin) Thompson, Travis Mendenhall, Tyler Selbe, Janessa Selbe, Cody Kinderknecht, Lane Keith, Dylan Friedel, Sacia Friedel, Lillian Rhodes, Zachary Rhodes, Justin Deges, and Nicole Jacob; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale (Ann) Jacob of Deerfield, Kansas, and Loyal J. Jacob of Middleboro, Massachusetts; a sister, Joyce (Frank) Gallagher of Hoxie, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Richard; and a brother, Claire Jacob.

A Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 24, 2018 at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Grainfield Cemetery.
