Karen E. (Cowell) Coffman

Karen E. (Cowell) Coffman passed away at her home in Lenora, Kansas on Friday, September 7, 2018.

She was born in Denver, Colorado to Jasper and Thelma (Kennedy) Cowell, on January 15, 1943. She attended Westminister High School in Westminister, Colorado. On April 3, 1961, Karen was united in marriage to Gerald “Jerry” Coffman in Denver, Colorado. Karen and Jerry had a family of three children. They made their home and raised their children in Denver, Colorado and later moved to Lenora, Kansas.

Karen owned and ran Karen’s Café in Lenora for more than ten years. She was a great cook as her family and former customers can confirm. Karen and Jerry loved to dance in their younger years. Almost every Friday night they would attend a dance somewhere. They also did some traveling. They took a trip to the ocean, but the mountains were always Karen’s favorite. She loved Christmas! It was her “holiday”. Her yard was decorated in themes of Christmas, and one could see the lights in her yard from the highway. She loved to decorate the Christmas tree, and she even put foil on the walls so the lights from the tree would reflect off it. Karen was a spiritual person who enjoyed watching and listening to Joyce Meyers on TV. Above everything, Karen loved her family and took good care of them. The times they were all together were what she enjoyed most.

Karen is survived by her son, Jerry Coffman and wife Mindy of Denver, Colorado; daughters, Julie Scheetz and husband Chris of Clayton, Kansas, and Sheri Hachmeister and husband Jay of Lenora, Kansas; a sister, Janice Shaklee of Denver, Colorado; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Coffman; parents, Jasper and Thelma Cowell; brothers, Gary and Jim Cowell; and a sister, Marge Setzer.

A Graveside Service is planned for Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the South Lenora Cemetery, Lenora, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Services of Northwest Kansas.

Karen loved life, loved her family, and cared about her friends. She would hope that when people grieve for her it was because she touched their lives with caring and simplicity. Karen would say while life was good to her, she would hope she was good to life. The special moments and memories of life will never change and will be in the hearts of her loved ones and friends today and forever more.
