Former Missouri Tiger Max Scherzer picks up his tenth win of the season as the Detroit Tigers hold off the Royals 3-1 in the opening game of their four-game series in Kansas City Thursday night.
Scherzer scattered four hits over the first six innings before giving up a pair of singles in the seventh. Phil Coke came on in relief and protected the Tigers 2-1 lead by retiring Mike Moustakas on a fly ball to center. The Royals had two won with two out in the ninth and Moustakas flied to left to end the game.
Royals rookie left-hander Danny Duffy allowed two runs on four hits over six stellar innings. The two runs came on a Ryan Raburn homer. Duffy struck out six and walked only one but still lost for the fourth time in his first five big league decisions. All-Star Aaron Crow gave up a home run in the eighth.
Game two of the series tonight with Kyle Davies pitching for the Royals. Pre-game at 6:35pm tonight on KAYS.
