Tomas Mares garnered MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week honors, announced today (Sept. 25) by the MIAA office. Mares is the first Tiger to earn the honor in the programs short history in the MIAA.

Mares delivered the game winning goal in the second overtime against Northeastern State in a match-up of top 25 teams and the two top teams in the region. Just over a minute into the second overtime Mares controlled a free kick from Carlos Linares from midfield and fired near the top of the box to give the Tigers the win. It was Mares second goal of the game as the Tigers remain unbeaten in MIAA play. The 5-10 senior forward is a native of Tulsa, Okla. and transferred to FHSU after playing at NOC-Tonkawa and Tulsa Memorial High School.

Mares has started all eight games so far in 2012 and ties for the team lead in goals with five and points with 10. Daniel Peralta also has five goals on the season. Of his five goals, two have been game-winners, including the goal against NSU.

The No. 15 Tigers are 7-1 and lead the MIAA standings with a 3-0 record. FHSU continues MIAA play this week, hosting Lindenwood on Thursday (Sept. 27) and Southwest Baptist on Saturday (Sept. 29).
