The temperature is cooling down, and one way some people stay warm is with a space heater. Unfortunately, if not used property, space heaters can be dangerous. Hays Fire Chief Gary Brown says the newer models have built in safety devices such as tip over switches.

Other tips include making sure the electrical cord is not damaged and the space heater doesn’t pull too much electricity and flip the breaker or cause a short circuit. The use of extension cords is not advised.
