Smith Center’s Roger Barta to Retire

After 35 years of coaching, Smith Center’s Roger Barta is calling it quits. Barta informed his team at their season-ending meeting Wednesday night that this past season is his last.

Barta has 323 coaching victories and guided the Redmen to 11 state title game appearances, winning eight titles.

He engineered a state record 79-game winning streak which culminated in a fourth straight state title in 2009. The streak prompted Barta and the Redmen to be featured in a New York Times best selling book Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center RedmenĀ written by author Joe Drape.
