The Hays Larks chances at winning the Jayhawk League got a little harder after they split their doubleheader with Derby Sunday at Larks Park. The Larks score a run in the seventh to hold off the Twins 7-6 in game one. The Twins use a three-run fifth to break a 1-1 tie and take game two 4-1 leaving both teams 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Haysville Heat.
The Larks score three in the second in the first game to build a 4-1 lead and were up 6-3 before the Twins tied the game with three in the sixth. Tito Andino scored the winning run, pinch running for Jon Ryan who singled to lead off the seventh. Andino moved to second on a bunt, stole third then scored on a wild pitch. Andrew Heck gave up all six runs on nine hits over six innings but picks up his first win of the summer. Michael Burchett gets his ninth save. Sean Wilson went 4-for-4 and Aaron Cornell drove in two and scored two runs.
The Larks strand nine in the second game, seven of them in scoring position and left the bases loaded without scoring in the third. Nick Goza took the loss in his first start of the season, allowing all four runs on six hits over four innings.
The Larks are now 26-16 and 18-13 in the Jayhawk League where they are in a three-way tie for second with Derby and Liberal. They go for a split in the four-game series Monday night at seven o’clock.
