City Discusses Bicycle Lanes

bike_laneA plan to add bicycle lanes to selected streets in Hays was presented to the commission last week. Phase 1A would cost nearly $273,000 and would use signage and pavement markings to create a route around the city. Phase 1B would cost over $500,000 and add some concrete paths, including a cap on the Big Creek levy. The city wants to apply for a state grant to offset some of the cost. Commissioner Henry Schwaller says he supports the first phase.

Hays is waiting on a report on the levy before making any improvements, but the deadline for the grant application is next month.

The city has budgeted enough to cover the first option, which could be done this summer. Applying for the state grant will be considered at the next meeting.
