Johnny Giavotella hit his first major league home run and scored twice as the Kansas City Royals survive a weather delay and a Detroit rally for a 4-3 win.

Giavotella also doubled in his third game since being called up from Triple-A Omaha. Mitch Maier added an RBI triple for the Royals.

Starter Bruce Chen (6-5) was pulled after a 46-minute rain delay in the sixth inning but earned his first win in five starts. He was charged with three runs on five hits in five-plus innings, striking out five and walking none.

The Royals avoid the sweep with the win after losing the previous two games by the same 4-3 score.

Kansas City is in Tampa Bay tonight as they open a seven-game road trip. Luke Hochevar makes the start with Royals pre-game at 5:35pm on KAYS (1400-AM)
