The trains keep running in Hays and across Kansas. Union Pacific watches the weather along with everyone else. Raquel Espinosa, with the railroad told Hays Post that the biggest challenge is usually “attempting to anticipate when are where their crews and snow removal equipment is going to be needed.” The blizzard conditions are the biggest challenge this time. “We obviously want to keep the trains running but who knows where the biggest drifts will be? We are ready. There may be slight delays. The weather will not keep the trains delayed long.”
On their Facebook Page, U.P reminds motorists, “During the extreme winter weather conditions that are forecast for most of the Midwest, Union Pacific reminds you to use extreme caution when driving across grade crossings. With reduced visibility because of the blowing and drifting snow, it could be difficult for motorists to see where crossing surfaces are located. When possible, use over or under passes to get to the other side of railroad tracks.
Safety tip: If you are driving too fast for the slick conditions you will not be able to stop in time to avoid running into the path of or into the side of a moving train at a crossing. It can take a mile or more to stop a train, and, by the time a locomotive engineer sees you on the track, it is too late to stop.”
