The Kansas House has unanimously rejected tax legislation from the Senate to send a message that House members don’t want to cancel a planned decrease in the state’s sales tax.

The House’s 120-0 vote Friday night drew laughter and applause from members.

They were considering a plan approved by the Senate for cutting individual income tax rates over the next four years.

To stabilize the budget, senators would keep the sales tax at 6.3 percent. The tax is scheduled by law to drop to 5.7 percent in July.

House members approved a plan to allow the sales tax to drop and cut income taxes less aggressively.

The two chambers have been negotiating over tax proposals. Lead Senate negotiator Les Donovan said the House vote didn’t mean anything.
