Based on an assessment conducted through the High Risk Rural Road program, the Ellis County Commission has decided to apply for funding to address some low cost improvements such as better signage and pavement markings. Commissioner Swede Holmgren says the greater needs such as potholes and washboard areas are not covered in this program.
Through the High Risk Rural Road program, the federal government covers 90% of the costs, but that doesn’t include right-of-way acquisition, which would be needed for the large safety improvement projects.
The county will apply for funds to add gravel to the edge of the pavement and shoulder area.
