The Hays High Indians defeated the Goddard Lions 8-1 on Saturday afternoon to win the 2013 Diamond Classic Baseball Tournament with a 3-1 record. Salina Central also went 3-1, but their loss was to Hays High, giving the Indians the tie-breaker.
Both Hayden Hutchison and Daniel Bittel hit home runs in the 8-1 win for Hays. Hutchison hit a solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the first. Bittel’s third career home run used the strong north wind to go over the right field fence in the fourth inning to give Hays High a 6-0 lead.
Kade Parker pitched a complete game for the victory. Parker (2-1) allowed just one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out five. All four of the hits by Goddard were singles.
Hays moves to 12-4 on the season, Goddard drops to 5-11.
Hays has four games left on the season, playing at home for Senior Day on Tuesday v Liberal and then travel to Junction City to finish the season on Friday. The Junction City double header is a make up from earlier in the year due to weather.
