(AP) — Top Republicans in the Kansas Senate have pushed a new tax plan through their chamber in hopes of ending a deadlock with House GOP leaders.

The Senate voted 24-15 Thursday night to lower the state sales tax on groceries to 4.95 percent next January but keep it at 6.3 percent on other items.

The Senate’s GOP leaders hope the House will take an up-or-down vote on the measure Friday. Passage would send it to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

Brownback wants to cut income taxes further to follow up on massive reductions last year. Raising additional sales tax revenue would prevent budget shortfalls.

The sales tax is scheduled by law to drop to 5.7 percent in July. House Republicans had proposed setting the tax at 6 percent.
