Angel Shaver of WaKeeney, 2013 Ms. Wheelchair Kansas

Angel Shaver,  Ms. Wheelchair Kansas is scheduled to make a special appearance in the gallery of Hays Public Library on Saturday at 2 p.m.  She was crowned during a weekend ceremony in March at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. Shaver, age 38, is from WaKeeney and does not let her disability define who she is and what she can do.

Although she has been through many challenges in life, including receiving nerve damage and a traumatic brain injury in 2004, Angel has not let this stop her from living a full life. She is a wife, mother of two children, and proudly owns the label of “domestic engineer,” also known as a stay at home mom. Angel, who lives in WKkeeney, is not just a stay at home mom, though. She currently works as the Secretary at the WaKeeney Church of God. She is also a bookkeeper and piano teacher. Angel also volunteers as a LeadHer Coordinator, Mom’s in Prayer Leader, and a member of the PTO. She has also been an America Heritage Girls Trailblazer Troop Leader, taught Sunday school and a children’s program at her church, and helped with the music program at her church. Angel was also a Ms. Wheelchair Kansas contestant in 2006 and 2007. When not taking care of her family, working, or volunteering, Angel actively maintains two internet blogs: one about living her life as a person with a disability and the other about her faith journey. In June, Angel began a partnership with her new service dog. Angel holds a Master of Science degree in Family Therapy from Friends University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science and Bible/Theology from Mid-America Bible College in Oklahoma. She is an avid reader, loves to travel, and has a goal to, one day, visit all 50 states (she has already visited 35!). Angel describes herself as a Christian, wife, mom, smart, and determined. She hopes to empower and support other women, as well as serve as a role model, encouraging people to not let challenges prevent them from reaching their goals and accomplishing much in life!
