Midwest Energy is sending Victoria High School junior Audra Nowak to Washington, D.C., for the 52nd annual “Government in Action” Youth Tour, June 13-20.
Nowak, the daughter of P.J. and Kim Nowak of Victoria, is one of five students selected by Midwest Energy, and one of 34 Kansas high school students selected by electric cooperatives throughout the state, to attend the trip.
Once in Washington, the Kansas delegation will join more than 1,500 high school students from across the nation on the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. During their week-long stay in Washington, these youth will see “Government in Action.” They will meet and visit with United States Senators and Representatives, and will tour many sites including the Capitol, Smithsonian Institute, Mt. Vernon, and several memorials.
“Midwest Energy’s vision statement is to ‘build a brighter future for our customer-owners,” said Earnie Lehman, President and General Manager at Midwest Energy. “This tour enables that by giving very bright students insight into the political process, helping them become future community leaders.”
Other students sponsored by Midwest Energy include Kylie Jones of Rexford; Sierra Spencer Lohoefener of Oberlin; Christina Sledd of Chase, and Kelly Wycoff of Scott City.
Since 1964, the nation’s electric cooperatives have collectively organized similar trips for more than 41,000 high school juniors and seniors. The tour is coordinated by Kansas Electric Cooperatives, the statewide service organization for the rural electric cooperatives in Kansas.
