The World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics Kansas is coming to the area on Saturday, September 10, to help raise money for the Special Olympics.
The Convoy is a one-day celebration that brings together Special Olympic athletes, coaches, supporters, and truckers to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Kansas.
There are two convoys that travel I-70 and convene in Colby. The west leg of the convoy meets at Wilken’s Truck and Trailer in Goodland and the east leg meets at Mitten’s Truck stop in Oakley. Registration for the west leg begins at 7:30 a.m. MT with departure at 8:45 a.m. MT and the east leg registers at 8:30 a.m. CT with departure at 10:00 a.m.
The two convoys will meet in Colby for lunch and an awards ceremony at the Thomas County Fairgrounds.
The World’s Largest Truck Convoy started as a single event held in Orlando, FL in 2001 with only 97 trucks raising $17,000, the Truck Convoy has expanded dramatically over the years with over 8,000 trucks traveling over 200,000 miles, and more than $577,000 raised in 2010. In 2010, thousands of truck drivers, company owners, Department of Transportation officials and law enforcement officers participated in events held in 26 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics. The Kansas Convoy ranked 6th overall in 2010, with 37 trucks and over $36,000 raised for Special Olympics Kansas.
