First Care Clinic in Hays is expanding its dental clinic from three to eight chairs.

Brady says the federally funded community health center is filling a gap and not competing with other dental providers.
In May of this year, 87% of the First Care Clinic patients either had public insurance or were uninsured.
A Barton County woman has been named the EMS Administrator of the Year by the Kansas Emergency Medical Services Association.
Ellinwood EMS Director Debbie Glenn was recognized during the group’s annual summer conference August 7-11 in Wichita.
Glenn has worked for the Ellinwood EMS Department for nearly 20 years. During that time, the department has been recognized for their excellence at the state and national levels.

Kim Schneweis, co-chairwoman of the Hays-NEA bargaining unit, brought that message back to the table after a 10-minute caucus late Tuesday afternoon.
The tentative agreement was finally reached between negotiations teams for USD 489 and the Hays National Educators Association late Tuesday afternoon.
Both teams plan for a ratification vote soon.

Eagle Communications CEO/President Gary Shorman was the “winner” of Tuesday’s “Kiss A Pig” fundraiser by Eagle employees for the United Way of Ellis County.
Six Eagle employees agreed to pucker-up to a pig, thinking the person with the most donations would win.
But no, contest committee members changed the rules just before the “reveal,” and all six Eagles got to lock lips (or snout) with the black and white piglet.
The Eagle employees who puckered up for the United Way are Shorman-$59.14; Broadband Division General Manager Travis Kohlrus-$11.84; Director of Operations Sara Meder-$11.29; Country Bull Y102 Radio Morning Show Host Mike Holliday-$7.49; Eagle Community TV Rich Sieker-$6.01; and Eagle Community TV/Hays Post News Becky Kiser-$2.26, whose strategy of raising the least amount of money backfired.
The 6-day old male Hampshire-cross piglet was provided by the FHSU Farm Swine Unit Manager Clay Hamil.

The first day of classes also brings the annual Back-To-School picnic at Fort Hays State University.
The Hays Mall parking lot was filled with lots of black and gold early this afternoon, site of the 2013 FHSU Tiger Football Autograph Day.
Fans were given colorful season schedule posters to be signed by the players, coaches and cheerleaders, who were seated in two neat rows in the parking lot.
Mascot Victor E. Tiger wasn’t seated; it’s not easy to do with that long tail, so Victor enjoyed the afternoon strolling among the crowd, posing for pictures with his very own fans.

A cool temperature of just 73 degrees and a cloudy sky still couldn’t keep the Hays Aquatic Park from “going to the dogs” Saturday.
Canines and their humans enjoyed the annual K-9 Swim and Play sponsored by the Hays Recreation Commission.
Pool chemicals were adjusted for a different breed of swimmer in the zero-depth entry pool before the water is drained for the season.

The 16th Annual Youth Outdoor Festival is underway today at the Hays City Sportsman’s Club north of Hays.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism along with Hays area conservation groups and businesses are sponsoring free target shooting and outdoor activities for youth 17 and under.
Youth can try trap shooting, skeet shooting, archery, air rifle/BB guns, muzzleloaders, small bore rifles, computerized laser shot target shooting, and even paintball target shooting. There is also a B.A.S.S. casting competition and furharvesting demonstrations.
Equipment, targets and ammunition is provided free of charge. Pheasants Forever and Eagle Communications are providing a free lunch.
Activities continue until 3 o’clock this afternoon.
It’s been a big week for the Hays First Care Clinic.
Tuesday they announced an expansion of the dental care program. Friday morning, CEO Bryan Brady and his medical staff announced the clinic’s acceptance into a program Brady says is transforming how they provide health care on the medical clinic side:
These little ones from the Lawrence Humane Society are on their way to new homes in Colorado.
As part of National Health Center Week, the Hays Lions Club, in partnership with First Care Clinic and Walgreens, is providing free community health screenings.
More than 140 people participated Thursday, according to Hays Lions Club member Jim Huenergarde who coordinated the event.
The screenings provide information about blood glucose/diabetes risk, blood pressure, dental health, vision acuity and field of vision, and hearing. The tests are done inside a large air-conditioned trailer in the northwest corner of Walgreens parking lot.
Everyone ages 6 months and up is invited to participate. Screenings are offered until 2p.m. this afternoon.
“We’ll definitely do this again next year,” says Huenergarde. “We were hoping for 100-125 people, and we’re way past that number.”
